Product Description

Ajiri Tea directly benefits the women, children and farmers of western Kenya by providing jobs and educational assistance. 100% of the profits go toward school fees and the purchase of books and uniforms for the orphans of western Kenya. In addition to donating the profits, Ajiri tea employs women in the Kisii region of Kenya to design and handcraft each label using banana bark. Ajiri means “to employ” in Swahili.

Ajiri black tea is produced at the Nyansiongo Tea Factory, which is owned by over 10,000 small-scale farmers. The farmers independently grow the tea on their one- to two-acre shambas in the Kisii Highlands, an area known for its fertile soil and its abundance of rainfall and sunlight. The farmers handpick the top two leaves and the bud with their fingers, throwing these handfuls of shoots into a woven basket. The leaves are then carried to the community-based tea-buying center, where they are weighed and checked for quality before being brought to the factory. At the factory, the tea is dried, cut, and sorted into grades.

Kenya is famous for its tea and Ajiri Tea is remarkably fresh, bold, and flavorful. This robust black tea can be served hot or iced and stands up to milk or cream very well. Ajiri is a perfect tea for anyone used to drinking coffee.

By supporting farmers, employing women to create the unique handmade labels on every tea box, and paying school fees for orphans, we hope to make a difference in Kenya today and in the future. For more information check out www.ajirifoundation.org
